MAYOR ANNOUNCES 24 PEACE OFFICERS TO BE HIRED THIS YEAR TO PATROL TRANSIT BUSES AND STOPS – TRANSIT UNION THRILLED BUT SAYS MUST HAVE THE RIGHT PEOPLE FOR THE JOB

WINNIPEG, March 2, 2023 – In his State of the City address, Mayor Scott Gillingham announces his goal to hire and train 24 Peace Officers this year to patrol Winnipeg Transit buses and stops – Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505 looks forward to getting boots on the ground as soon as possible, but they must be the right boots for the job.

“We are thrilled with this announcement to improve Transit safety in conjunction with additional supports to address homelessness, mental health, and addiction crises – all factors that can contribute to crime.” Said Chris Scott, President of ATU Local 1505.

“We have been advocating for a Transit safety team with Peace Officer status, so they have the authority they need to have to adequately protect our passengers and our members.” Continued Scott.

“However, in addition to having the proper powers to perform the duties required, these individuals would also need specialized training to meet the demands of working such a unique space like a bus.”

“We need to make sure we get the right people for the job.” Said Scott.

“We look forward to having further discussions with our elected officials and having a seat at the table when it comes to making these decisions.”
