SEVERAL TRANSIT WORKERS SUFFER ABUSE – TRANSIT UNION PLEADS FOR BUREAUCRATIC PROCESSES TO BE EXPEDITED

WINNIPEG, November 25th, 2022 – Yesterday, on November 24th, 2022, several Winnipeg Transit employees suffered a series of abuse from disruptive Transit users, including verbal assaults, death threats, objects being thrown at them, and being spit on. While the Winnipeg Police Service responded quickly and made arrests, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505 is still picking up the pieces.

“These assaults have long-lasting negative impacts on the mental health of our members and our passengers who must witness and endure such events.” Said Romeo Ignacio, President of ATU Local 1505. “Transit workers deserve a safe work environment, and our passengers deserve safe transportation.”

“We have had some very productive meetings with the Mayor and Council during the last two weeks and feel that there are some great solutions on the table to make Transit safer.” Continued Ignacio. “However, we are hopeful that our new Mayor and City Council will prioritize the safety initiatives that we have discussed and expedite the process.

ATU Local 1505 would like to thank the Winnipeg Police Service for their swift apprehension of the accused individuals involved in the assaults.

ATU Local 1505 calls for a Transit Security Force, extended shields, and updated radio systems for a safer Transit system for everyone.
