SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON TRANSIT BUSES – TRANSIT UNION DEEMS IT A DOWNRIGHT SHAMEFUL PUBLIC SAFETY CRISIS 

WINNIPEG, September 22, 2022 – Throughout the morning of September 20, 2022,

an adult male passenger boarded a number Transit buses and sexually assaulted female passengers by grabbing their buttocks, attempting to kiss them, and also spit on another passenger as he left a bus; Police were notified after the victims alerted bus operators of what happened – Amalgamated Transit Union Local (ATU) 1505 is outraged.

PRESS RELEASE: WINNIPEG, September 9, 2022 – On September 7th, 2022 mayoral candidate, Jenny Motkaluk released her platform, “A City of Opportunity: Jenny’s Plan for Winnipeg,” containing unauthorized use of an image and quote by Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505 – ATU seeks immediate removal.

WINNIPEG, August 31, 2022 –At this morning’s Community Committee meeting, a motion brought forward by Councillor Shawn Nason, Transcona Ward, for a Transit Security Force and full safety shields on buses was passed.  Additionally, Councillor Nason and Councillor Jason Schreyer, Elmwood-East Kildonan Ward, moved to prioritize the replacement of the aging bus radio communication system. Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 is cautiously optimistic.

PRESS RELEASE:  WINNIPEG, August 18, 2022 – Glen Murray Commits to a ten-point plan for a safer Public Transit Service for passengers, Transit workers, and the general public – Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505 is encouraged by the pledge.

Murray commits to providing much-needed improvements in the Transit system such as: Replacing obsolete radio communication systems in buses, providing extended protective operator shields, creating trained staff to be available for conflict resolution on buses, and restoring community policing efforts.

ATU 1505 is proud to support the Share the Magic Book Program!

“Share the Magic is a CRA federally registered charity which collects new and gently used books for free distribution to all ages in traditionally disadvantaged communities throughout Manitoba with the goal of increasing literacy levels…To date, Share the Magic has given away over half a million books” (Canada Helps).

ATU 1505 members were proud to donate a collection of books and a monetary contribution to the Share the Magic Book Program, collected by Executive Director, Chris Melnick.   

 

PRESS RELEASE: WINNIPEG, August 15, 2022 – On August 13, 2022, at approximately 4:45 a.m., two male Transit operators, off duty and in uniform, were assaulted while in the parking lot near the Fort Rouge Transit Garage – and this raises significant safety concerns for Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505.

PRESS RELEASE:  WINNIPEG, August 4, 2022 – While ATU members rallied at City Hall for a safer Transit System after the attempted stabbing of an Operator just two weeks ago, Transit workers were literally being assaulted while on duty.
