PRESS RELEASE - OCTOBER 11, 2023

ATU Local 1505 to Hold 'Just Practicing' Information Picket for Fair Wages and Working Conditions

Winnipeg, October 11, 2023 — The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505 is set to host a 'Just Practicing' information picket on October 11, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The event will be held in front of the Fort Rouge Garage located at 421 Osborne, Winnipeg. We are asking Media to attend around 2:30 PM.

The rally serves as a demonstration of the union's resolve to secure fair wages and uphold working conditions that prioritize the well-being of transit workers. Despite nine months of negotiations, conciliation between ATU Local 1505 and the employer has reached an impasse, leaving no mutually agreeable terms to present to the membership for a vote.

"We've been at the negotiation table for nearly a year, and progress has been disappointingly slow," remarked Chris Scott, President, and Business Agent for ATU Local 1505. "Our members deserve fair compensation for their contributions to Winnipeg's transit system, and we stand united in our opposition to the introduction of part-time employment, a proposal that does not align with our vision for a stable and committed workforce."

The 'Just Practicing' rally is a call to action, signifying the seriousness with which ATU Local 1505 views these crucial issues. The union asserts its willingness to take job action, if necessary, to secure a favorable agreement that reflects the needs and aspirations of its members.

"We believe that fair wages and full-time employment are not only essential for our workers' livelihoods but also vital for maintaining the high standard of service that Winnipeg's transit system is known for," Chris Scott emphasized.

It is important to note that while ATU 1505 does have a confirmed strike mandate vote from their membership, conducted in July 2023, the 'Just Practicing' information picket is not a formal strike action. ATU Local 1505 remains committed to the conciliation process and seeks a fair and equitable resolution that respects the rights and interests of all parties involved.

ATU Local 1505 invites all members, supporters, and concerned citizens to join them on October 11, 2023, as they come together in unity and solidarity, demanding equitable treatment and recognition of the integral role transit workers play in the community.
